Sunday July 12; what will you be doing? Watching the Tour de France? Brunching? Taking a long walk on the beach? If you’ve got an open window, and fancy getting a great ride in, and capping it off with great food catered by Whole Foods and beer from Kichesippi, join us in Arnprior for the third edition of Champlain’s Folly!
What is it, you ask? CF is a fund and awareness raiser for the Ottawa Velodrome Project. The Project is all about building a velodrome in the Ottawa area. It’s a project undertaken by riders, for riders. Actually, that’s not quite right. The velodrome is envisioned as infrastructure for the community, cyclists and non-cyclists alike. It’s for kids to learn how to ride, for those with physical impairments to ride, for the aged to ride, and yes, for bike racers too. Doug Corner is hard at work trying to find a site to build the track as I write.
Champlain’s Folly is a cyclosportif. That means it’s not a race, but it does attract a lot of fast riders who ride fast in groups. Five (!) routes are on offer, ranging from the family-friendly 32k Azure to the 85k Astrolabe, 130/160k Road to China, and new for this year, the Dirty 130k. The latter marks the events first true foray in the spirit of Champlain, tackling a pretty ‘out there’ dirt road route that is rather secluded and rugged. In other words, it should be an adventure! There will be one unmanned water stop along the route, but this ought to be a 3-bottle ride for certain; be prepared! Like our raudax format Ride of the Damned, it will be best for riders to stick together and help each other out in the event of issues along the route.
If you’ll ride the D130, you’ll want at least 25mm tires and proper supplies: two tubes, patches, multitool, a master link for your chain, and a pump. It’s going to be fun!
For all the info, and link to registration (which closes Wednesday, July 8, midnight), head over to the Champlain’s Folly website. To check out photos from previous years, check out the event’s flickr feed.
If you want to talk tires, keep your eyes out for a squad of Tekné CC riders riding the Dirty 130 route 😉 I suspect we’ll be on Compass tires for the most part; smooth!
See y’all there!
